Alumni in Print—Where Are They Now?

The Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation is publishing profiles featuring some of their more than 6000 former scholarship recipients. This series gives you an up close and personal insight into the thoughts and motivations of the former students who are a part of our industry today. As our current employees reach retirement and leave, replacing them becomes an increasingly important factor for many companies. Here is one story…

A Profile

Hannah Brown attended Western Michigan University, and received her Bachelor of Applied Science, in the Graphic and Printing Sciences program, graduating in 2013.

How did you first get interested in the graphic arts, or decide to focus on graphic communications in school?

My interest in graphic arts started way back when I was in High School. I took every art
class and had two years of Yearbook class. I was the Editor in Chief my Senior year.

Did you take any courses in high school that were related to graphic communications, or that prepared you for your planned career?

I think my Yearbook classes prepared me the most for going into graphic arts because I was able to use and learn the Adobe programs. So, when I entered college I knew a lot more of the basics than others did.

How do you think going through your education process prepared you for the workforce?

Yes, I believe that it did. I am not in a graphic design focused career anymore, but now in a printing focused one. My college courses prepared me for making that change.

In the Workforce Today

What company are you working for now and what types of products and services do they provide to their customers?

I work for Schattdecor, Inc. in St. Louis, Missouri. We gravure print the paper that later is turned into laminate flooring, furniture or countertop products. Our headquarters is in Germany and we have locations all over the world, making us the leader in décor printing.

What job did you first have with the company when you started, what position do you have now, and/or what else have you done since joining the company?

I started as, and still currently am, the Digital Lab Coordinator with Schattdecor.

What do you think employers are looking for in today’s workforce and the current industry environment?

I think employers are mostly looking for personality, before skill and knowledge. Of course, skill and knowledge are very important too. But when you are first starting out in the professional world, having a personality that works and fits well with others in the company is important to get hired.

Have you changed your plans or ideas about what area or type of job you might like to have since you first considered the graphic communications field and began studying for a career in it?

No, I am still very interested in printing and graphics

What do you see yourself doing a few years from now?

Probably my same role, but hopefully on a larger scale as our company grows in the USA.

Was being a recipient of a PGSF scholarship important, or did it have an impact on your future or ability to succeed in the industry?

It most definitely was important. I was very excited and thankful to be a recipient because that meant I didn’t have to take out as much money on my student loan. And I am one of the fortunate ones that had many scholarships awarded to me from the printing industry. So, while I still had loans, I was able to pay them off in a short time.

Anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for considering me for your interview! I am glad that I could help spread the word about the good work that PGSF does to help young people get started in the industry!
